Description

Custom Abutment Design Service

Product brief. Custom Abutment Design is our implant-prosthetics service for one-piece, screw-retained and cementable abutments in titanium or zirconia. Your lab sends the scan with the implant position and connection details; our designers return a manufacture-ready abutment — connection matched to your system, emergence profiled to the soft tissue, screw channel corrected for angulation — within 12–24 hours.

The abutment is where implant restorations succeed or fail: a generic stock abutment fights the tissue, while a properly designed custom abutment supports it. Our designers build every case from the scan and the soft-tissue contour — platform switched or tissue-level per your plan, emergence gradually widened through the peri-implant zone, finish line positioned where your technician wants it, and occlusal geometry set for the screw or cement path you choose.

What is included in every case

  • One-piece custom abutments — titanium or zirconia, for cement-retained crowns and bridges
  • Screw-retained abutments — with straight or angled screw channels, access corrected where implant position allows
  • Multi-unit abutment-level designs — for All-on-X and full-arch screw-retained prostheses
  • Hybrid and Ti-base designs — titanium base with zirconia superstructure interface, verified for your Ti-base system
  • Emergence profiling — soft-tissue-adapted contours from scan data or your custom healing abutment scan
  • Connection verification — anti-rotation, platform match and seating checked against the implant library before export

All major implant systems supported

We work from the built-in libraries of exocad and 3Shape, covering connections from the systems your lab handles daily — including Nobel Biocare, Straumann, Dentsply, Zimmer Biomet, Osstem, Megagen, MIS, Neodent and more. If your system or a third-party Ti-base is not in the library, send the connection scan or spec sheet and we design against it — flagged and verified, never guessed.

What we need from you

  • Scan of the implant position (scan body in place) plus opposing arch and bite
  • Implant system and connection type — or simply the scan body used
  • Restoration plan: cement or screw retention, titanium or zirconia, and finish-line preference
  • Soft-tissue contour reference: healing abutment scan or pre-extraction scan where available

Turnaround

Standard custom abutment design is returned within 12–24 hours of case receipt — single abutments often much sooner. Full-arch and multi-unit cases are scheduled with your surgical or delivery date in mind. Urgent case? Send it through with your deadline and we will confirm the schedule before starting.

Why labs outsource custom abutment design to Odontalab

  • Designers who check every connection against the library — no mismatches reaching your mill
  • Free unlimited minor revisions until the design is approved
  • True emergence profiling, not scaled cylinders — healthier peri-implant tissue outcomes
  • One design partner for abutments, crowns, bars and splints — fewer vendors to manage

Which implant systems can you design for?
All systems covered by the exocad and 3Shape libraries — Nobel, Straumann, Dentsply, Zimmer, Osstem, Megagen, MIS and more. For uncommon connections, send the scan body scan or spec sheet and we design against it with the connection flagged for your verification.
Can you correct an angled screw channel?
Yes — where the implant angle allows, we design a corrected screw access channel (within the limits of your Ti-base or abutment system) so the access hole exits through the cingulum or occlusal table.
Do you design for tissue-level and bone-level implants?
Both — platform-switched and non-switched, tissue-level and bone-level, with supragingival or subgingival finish lines per your lab’s protocol.
How fast can a case be returned?
Standard turnaround is 12–24 hours from receipt of complete records; single abutments often come back sooner. Mark urgent cases in your submission and we will confirm the schedule before starting.
How do we send a case?
Upload scans, the scan body used and your restoration plan through our Send a Case form. You receive design delivery and revision tracking by email — no plugins or software to install.
